A Day of Steam, Tornado, Tangmere, and Hemerdon Fail. 020815

LMS 46100 Royal Scot had the honour of hauling the inaugural Torbay Express of 2016 on 3rd July. It turned out to be a pretty bad day for Royal Scot despite the brilliant morning performance. She ran via Bath and Westbury in the morning to pick up passengers for this trip. My first location was at Newton St Loe, one of my personal favourites to film from and with a crisp morning sunshine, it made it even more a spectacle. She can seen at Saltford and with lovely exhaust as she glides along the Bristol to London Line and pretty soon the overhead wires will be introduced. After that , I decided to film at Berkley Marsh near Frome at one of the road bridges which would make a good view of Royal Scot accelerating away from Westbury. She can be heard powering along and she thundered through and sounding good voice as she pulls her 11 coach train bound for her water stop at Taunton. Next was Whiteball. After her stunning performance up Whiteball with The Great Britain IX back in April, I was hoping for the same kind of performance, How wrong was I. I could hear her in the distance but the chuffs became gradually slower and eventually coming to a complete stop. Apparently, it was very low on steam pressure and the crew decided to stop so they could work hard to restore some steam pressure ready for the final assault into Whiteball Tunnel. After 10 mins of waiting for her to move, she finally moved off. She recovered incredibly well despite a view slips within pulling away and into the tunnel. After that drama, I managed to head to Waterside near Goodrington Sands for the engine working really hard up the stiff climb to Churston before descending in to Kingswear. She can be heard with great exhaust and whistle to the onlookers in the distance, the climb was pretty spectacular and despite the weather not being exactly brilliant as this morning, it was still a great climb nevertheless.
