Here's how to apply penetrating oil to a hardwood floor: 1) Sand the floor to NWFA standards. 2) Clean the floor with WOCA wood cleaner. This removes any substances that would affect the finish, including pigments and tannin. A roller will help you achieve the proper spread rate. You can pull the oil from a puddle or use a paint tray. 4) Allow the oil to penetrate the floor for at least 15 minutes. 5) Buff the floor using a red pad and hook-and-loop patina disks. Patina disks are not required, but we recommend using them because they help force the oil into the wood grain. 6) Use a white pad covered in a terry towel to remove excess oil from the floor, and a plain white buffer pad to even out the oil. 7) Be sure to remove excess oil from potential bleed-back areas like beveled edges and expansion gaps. 8) Allow the floor to dry for 24 hours before applying the top coat of oil.
